Happy August my friends!
We've been waiting all year long for another three days of music, comedy, food and wine paradise. All of my favorite things in one place!
Upon first glance, this year’s headliners didn’t excite as much as in years past. Sure, I’ve always wanted to see Radiohead live – but OSL has stacked their roster with big names in the last few years. But after a deeper delve into the smaller acts on the bill for 2016, I couldn’t be more excited to hear familiar tunes and discover new acts.
I’ve gathered my top picks from this year’s lineup – all the way from the small names you’ve never heard of to the headliners. Put your headphones on and get ready for another three magical days in the park.
DOWN AND OUTLAWS
I was late to jump on the Foals bandwagon, but after hearing about their latest album release on NPR’s All Songs Considered I’m a converted fan. Foals has perfected the energetic pop song with “My Number,” but the latest album What Went Down is more my speed. I’m hoping the title track “What Went Down” will be on the Outside Lands setlist - it’s definitely my favorite on the album!
Beach House is one of my all time favorites, and I couldn’t be more excited to see them take the stage at Outside Lands after the killer year that they had in 2015. With two albums within two months, the duo continues to evolve their signature trance-y sound and dreamy melodies. The band is well seasoned in their live performance, travelling the world together for over a decade. Beach House puts on a captivating show, so their performance is one of the most anticipated of the year.
LANA DEL REY
After a five year hiatus, LCD Soundsystem is back and they sound better than ever! After a successful reunion at Coachella in April, the group has headlined festival after festival. From Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo to Austin City Limits, LCD Soundsystem has become a well oiled machine. Their set at Outside Lands is sure to reflect their festival veteran status. If their performance at previous festivals is any indicator, they will be playing nostalgic tunes that will take you back to the early 2000’s. There’s nothing that makes me want to dance like Daft Punk Is Playing At My House.
Though I have mixed feelings about the Radiohead show at Outside Lands, any music lover would be crazy to miss the opportunity to see them play live. The word on the street is that seeing Radiohead at a festival can be quite a letdown. If their performance at Primavera Sound Festival is any indication, the show will only be a transformative experience for the lucky few in the front rows. Because the group prides themselves on their thoughtfully curated live performance, they often choose to forego the Jumbotron-like screens that project to those that didn't camp out for hours to snag that spot in the very first row. If this is the only opportunity that i will get to see one of the biggest bands of my generation, I won't miss it. But If the world revolved around me (I still think it might…) I would choose to see them in an indoor venue whose acoustics would enhance their dynamic sound.
INSIDER TIP: GET A TASTE OF THE BAY AREA
The best part about Outside Lands is not just the music. The food and beverage selection at OSL is unparalleled - so long greasy festival food that isn’t worth the calories. Outside Lands is really a showcase of the best of what the bay has to offer in terms of food and beverage. From Bay Area celebrity chefs to beers exclusive to Outside Lands, the music isn't the only thing that will draw a crowd.
